What Bothers Me Can Show Me What Matters

When something bothers me, I can stay with it for a long time.

Why did they say that?
Why did that affect me so much?
Why does this keep happening?
Why can I not just let it go?

Sometimes there is something I need to understand.

But sometimes I notice that the more I stare at what I do not want, the more completely it fills the room.

Lately, I have been trying a different question:

What is this showing me that matters to me?

If someone’s words feel unkind, maybe they are reminding me how much kindness matters to me.

If something feels fake, maybe what I am longing for is honesty.

If I feel crowded or controlled, maybe I am being reminded how deeply I value freedom, trust, and having a voice.

If everything feels loud and chaotic, maybe what I am missing is peace.

The difficult thing does not have to be good for me to learn something from my response to it.

I do not have to pretend I am grateful for what hurt me.

But I can become curious about what the hurt is pointing toward.

Maybe a difficult moment can become more than something I keep revisiting. Maybe it can help me understand something about myself.

Not:
Why is this happening again?

But:
What is this helping me see more clearly?

Sometimes what bothers me is showing me what I want to protect.
Sometimes it is showing me what I want to create more of.
And sometimes it is simply helping me name something I already knew mattered.
